Discover Our Roles
Our people are our greatest ambassadors so why not have a read and discover more about some of the roles at AWS.
Meet Jenn
Control Centre Team Leader
Jenn, Senior Control Centre Technician:
After leaving the MoD, I joined AWS as a Control Centre Coordinator and in that time, I have been promoted twice within the team. I am currently in a post that bridges the gap between the Control Centre, our different teams and senior management and I enjoy it because it’s fast-paced and varied. We are a very busy team, but we support each other and we all muck in to help each other out which is important to me.
I held a number of different roles in the MoD and from the diverse range of experiences I had there, I am no stranger to fast-paced working and speaking to lots of different people! From my military days, I built up a strong resilience and gained multiple skills which have been very useful here because in the Control Centre environment because we’re the first port of call for all internal and external customer queries.
I am responsible for a wide range of duties such as reporting, administration, external auditing, working with different departments and generally being kept busy in a job where no two days are the same! I also train members of the Control Centre team which is something I enjoy. There has been lots of change since I joined for the better and I look forward to my AWS future.
Meet Amber
O&M Manager
Amber, O&M Manager:
After graduating from my Applied and Human Biology degree, I began my career as a Water Quality Inspector within the Water Industry. From there, I was promoted to Senior Technician, before becoming Manager of the Water Sampling Team. I learnt a lot during my seven years in the Water Industry and it was around this time I felt ready for a career change. After this, I undertook a Legionella Project Manager role with the council that involved risk assessments, management of contractors, control plans and I discovered that an office-based role was not where I wanted to be! So, when I saw the O&M Manager role advertised with AWS, I applied, even though I didn’t meet ALL of the experience on the job description. I’d never managed an Operations & Maintenance team, but my sector and management knowledge/experience help me land the role back in 2022.
In my day-to-day job, I manage a team of nine skilled staff who look after our region’s sites with regards to daily operations and maintenance. My main role is to make sure the team have what they need to do their job effectively which includes things like managing contractors, financial management, site audits, health and safety, along with lots of other tasks too! Some days will be very reactive if, say, a mains burst or sewage blockage has taken place, and then other days I will be liaising with MoD stakeholders and conducting site visits on both local and more regional scales. The variety in this role is second to none and I am happiest when out and about with my team or meeting our customers, contractors and stakeholders. For me, being resilient and adaptable is key in this role and being solutions-focused will stand you in good stead!
We’ve got a really good culture here and even as a new starter, people would speak to me as though they had known me for ages which is lovely! In a male-dominated environment, it can be nerve-wracking for a woman but everyone has been so friendly, everyone is respected and we have a real strong unit.
Meet Jess
Asset Analyst
Jess, Asset Analyst (Networks):
I originally came to the UK to study at university and during my course, I held part-time roles such as housekeeping. After graduation, I took a Prison Officer job, but it wasn’t for me, so I decided to take up a Receptionist role with a manufacturing company. From there, I further developed my skills and knowledge through Coordination and Administration roles before applying to become a Control Room Scheduler with Ancala Water Services. This was a busy and challenging role, and it wasn’t until I applied for an Asset Technician role a couple of years ago that I learnt just how much there is to what we do behind the scenes at AWS!
Throughout the last two years, I have worked hard to learn as much as possible and earlier this year, I managed to secure the Asset Analyst role. The main part of my role is all about managing abstraction licenses, like making sure we are compliant with regulations and not abstracting too much water. My natural curiosity enjoys analysing the data, conducting root-cause analyses and I really enjoy the investigation element of the role, along with writing reports! In this small team, we work closely with regular team meetings and we are a super-close and busy team. I love the career progression opportunities I’ve been given at AWS and the flexible, hybrid working is a huge benefit. My manager is so supportive and they’re always there for advice and support. It says a lot that this is the longest place I’ve ever worked and the progression, development and support has been great!
